Mikhail
Chernov
Hello,
I am Mikhail Chernov, 37. I obtained my general medical
education and neurosurgical training in my native St-Petersburg
(Russia). After several years of clinical practice on
the permanent position of neurosurgeon in the Department
of Surgical Neurooncology of the Russian Polenov Neurosurgical
Institute and visitorships to The National Hospital for
Neurology and Neurosurgery (London, UK) and MD Anderson
Cancer Center (Houston, Texas) I came to Tokyo Women`s
Medical University to enter the Doctorate Program. There
might be a question: Why? The answer is clear: just few
centers in the world can be compared with TWMU, considering
the opportunities for advance neurosurgical training and
research.
Indeed, there is nothing in neurosurgery, which could
not be seen here. Brain tumors and AVM, carotid surgery
and vascular anastamosis, epilepsy and neuroendoscopy,
Gamma Knife and functional - all of these as routine everyday
practice. If the word "routine" can be applicable
for real cutting edge of the modern neurosurgery, which
is possible to observe in the OR each day. By the way,
not only observed: a lot of opportunities for clinical
work exist here, even for those who (as me) are not certified
in Japan.
Research opportunities, both clinical and basic, are not
less wide and vary from molecular biology to experimental
MRI. New innovative research proposals are widely accepted,
as, for example, my own, considering investigation of
metabolic changes in brain tumors after Gamma Knife Radiosurgery
by serial proton MRS. Scientific data are easy to present
at the variety of scientific conferences, which are extremely
well organized and collect not only high-level specialists
from Japan, but also world-famous experts from abroad.
Drs. Helmut Bertalanffy, Michael Apuzzo, Jean Regis are
frequent guests here. As well as a lot of both young and
experienced neurosurgeons from Brazil, Mexico, China,
Saudi Arabia, Vietnam, India, Indonesia, etc.
The atmosphere in the Department of Neurosurgery is extremely
friendly. The majority of doctors here had spent some
years abroad, either on research or clinical training,
and therefore they are not only speak fluent English,
but also very well understand the feelings of those who
are far away from their own home.
So, TWMU is an ideal place for those who wish to work
24-hours per day and 7-days per week in an atmosphere
of friendship and high professionalism for improvement
of personal knowledge and skills.
