Emergency Medicine

About us

In the field of emergency medicine, we aim to better understand the pathophysiology and bio-invasiveness of emergency intensive care in order to improve the survival and social rehabilitation rates of emergency and critically ill patients. The main research themes include the pathology and treatment of multiple organ failure, pathology and treatment of sepsis, prognosis and treatment of post-cardiopulmonary resuscitation syndrome, role of disaster base hospitals in treating large numbers of injured people in disasters, and end-of-life care in emergency intensive care. This research requires integrative analyses involving basic medical science fields and collaborations with multiple institutions and overseas organizations. By linking our findings to the clinical field and practical applications, we aim to improve the quality of emergency intensive care treatment and become an international opinion leader.

Research

(1) Research into the mechanism and clinical significance of septic disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC)
Determine the basic mechanisms underlying septic DIC and clarify the clinical effects of various treatments through randomized controlled trials.
(2) Database research and multi-institutional collaborative research on trauma and prehospital care
Students will learn general methodologies for epidemiological research in the emergency field.
(3) Research into the relationship between epilepsy and cardiac electrical activity
The mechanism underlying Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy (SUDEP) is unclear; however, abnormalities in cardiac electrical activity are thought to be a key factor. We are getting closer to elucidating the mechanisms through genetic analyses.
(4) Research into the prognosis and treatment of post-cardiac arrest syndrome and shock
We will develop strategies to improve social reintegration for patients with post-cardiopulmonary resuscitation syndrome through cerebral resuscitation and extracorporeal circulatory support.
(5) Research into the role of medical institutions during disasters
To create a sustainable training model based on scientific analyses of disaster medical training, with a goal of developing disaster training methods linked to the local community. The project also aims to develop a BCP for university hospitals, which serve as disaster base hospitals.
(6) Emergency and intensive care end-of-life care
We aim to examine end-of-life care in emergency and intensive care from the perspectives of patient and family care, patient and family rights, treatment options, and social, ethical, and legal aspects.
