Breast Surgery

About us

The Department of Breast Surgery traces its origins to the Department of Surgery established in 1967. After integrating with the former Second Department of Surgery (General Surgery) and the Department of Endocrine Surgery in 2015, it became an independent department under a new structure in 2021.

Breast cancer ranks as the most common cancer among Japanese women and is, unfortunately, expected to continue increasing, likely remaining the leading cancer even 20 years from now. It is said that 1 in 9 Japanese women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime, making it a very familiar disease.

The imaging diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer are advancing rapidly, making it an interesting field. Our graduate school specializes in research related to the diagnosis and treatment (surgery, pharmacotherapy) of breast diseases, primarily breast cancer. We also conduct joint research with related departments on breast reconstruction, radiation therapy, pharmacotherapy, palliative care, and genetic diagnosis.

Research

• Research on drug metabolism markers and cancer-related genes in breast cancer patients
• Analysis of various biomarkers in breast cancer patients
• Research on the application of liquid biopsy in diagnosis and treatment
• Development of new diagnostic technologies in breast cancer care
