Intelligent Operating Theater

Intelligent operating theater is the novel operating theater for 21st century which has an intraoperative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) unit and a newly developed real-time update navigation system. Intraoperative MRI compensates the brain deformation and shift during treatment, and assists interventionalists by its accurate and objective information. It achieves "evidence-based medicine (EBM) in operating theater", and the intuitive visualization of medical information is definitely advantageous for surgeons and patients. The intraoperative MR images are immediately and automatically sent to the real-time updating navigation system and the interventionalists can operate patients using the real-time and reliable information.

In FATS, we are studying about new imaging instruments (coils, surgical instruments), protocol/sequences optimization and development for MR-guided neurosurgery, and highly reliable navigation systems. Also, we are now trying to develop and assemble MR-compatible neurosurgical robot system for Intelligent Operation Room, which provide Advanced Eyes/Hands for surgeons.

Robotized Gamma Knife System

Gamma Knife (Stereotactic Gamma Radiosurgery) System is newly developed pin-point radiosurgery system. The gamma knife has a circle structure as seen in pictures below and 201 radioactive Co60 are allocated in a line along the inner surface of the part of upper hemisphere. The gamma rays converge on the center of sphere where the tissue of interest (lesion) exists to cauterize it. The site of lesion is automatically positioned using the system's robotic positioning system and a computer-assisted navigation system with 100µm accuracy. Thus the ablation can be done notably safely and effectively.

In FATS, we study for new control/monitoring system for Robotized Gamma Knife System to achieve more safe and reliable treatment system.

Virtual University System In order to share state-of-the-art medicine among patients (ubiquitously), it is, we think, strongly needed to establish rigid combination and collaboration of medicine and engineering at universities, and industry as well. FATS and collaborating organizations (universities institutes, and industry) are creating a "Virtual University System" as a "real collaborating research and development organization in medicine" without any spatiotemporal barrier through broadband network with rigid security system.   Main Laboratory FATS, the backbone/keystone of virtual university system, has high-speed network connection and wide screen network meeting theater. We can access intraoperatively to the intelligent operation theater and Robotized gamma knife room directly through hospital network, to monitor surgical and/or patient information, as well as to control the operation strategy intra-operatively.
